Relieving Musculoskeletal Pain With Acupuncture and TCM
It is estimated that more than 51 million people – more than 20% of US adults – have chronic pain according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Widespread musculoskeletal pain is deeply felt by many people along with the feeling of fatigue and mood issues. Thankfully, alternative remedies like Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offer a way to help ease chronic musculoskeletal pain. At Classical Herbs & Acupuncture, we have Dr. Carolyn Cook who is a Miami Acupuncturist, MSOM, AP, Dipl Canonical Chinese Medicine, LMT and delivers therapeutic properties for helping musculoskeletal conditions of all kinds.

What is Musculoskeletal Pain?

The National Institute of Health (2022) defined chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) as “persistent pain that affects muscles, joints, bones, and other parts of the human body.” It is attributed to conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic low back pain. Globally, musculoskeletal disorders affect 20 to 33% of the population. As we age, the likelihood of experiencing low back pain increases, with an incidence of 30-40% in adults.

There are many causes of musculoskeletal pain, including bone fractures, joint dislocation, direct blows to muscles, bones, or joints, poor posture, and sprains.

It’s important to regularly check with your doctor if you are experiencing some of the following CMP signs and symptoms:

  • Body aches and stiffness
  • Burning sensations in the muscles
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle twitches
  • Pain when you move
  • Sleep disturbances

How Acupuncture and TCM Can Help Ease Musculoskeletal Pain

Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM is one of the oldest systems of healing. It is a standardized version of Chinese medicine that has been practiced for more than 3000 years. TCM practitioners like Dr. Cook believe that chronic pain is mainly caused by a blockage of the Qi or an imbalance. As a result, their service will focus on correcting the flow of balance, whichever may be the case. According to Dr. Cook, widespread musculoskeletal pain may come from cold and damp getting into the body and taking hold on a deep level, causing pain and stiffness.

Fortunately, there is a comprehensive healing method in TCM that can manage help heal nerve damage and restore central nervous system function such as acupuncture. Acupuncture has an analgesic effect that can relieve muscle pain without side effects. For instance, moxibustion may be performed to bring warmth to areas of the body or cupping may be used to draw out damp cold and improve blood flow.
